What to do in Chaouen
Chaouen or Chefchaoun is a small Rif town is located in northern Morocco. Many travelers come to visit Chefchaouen after falling in love with the streets of the medina that we see many photographs of Morocco.
Almost all the points of interest of Chefchaouen, also called Chaouen, are located in the medina.
The medina is quite small and the streets are very beautiful, colorful and pleasant to walk around. We are very far from the overcrowded medinas of Marrakech or Fez. Here, you can walk calmly, at your own pace without having to dodge mopeds or donkeys loaded with skins!
You will be able to take most of the streets of the medina of Chefchaouen.
In key points not to be missed, I will put at the top of the list the main square of the medina, Uta el-Hammam square. Real heart of the medina, it is a meeting point, a place of discussion and the place to land in the medina thanks to the many cafes.
View from the kasbah of Chefchaouen
On this square, we find the great mosque of the city and the kasbah that we can visit. The gardens of the Kasbah are very pleasant. When you want to visit Chefchaouen, it's a bit of a must!
Northeast, on the edge of the medina, we find the source Ras el Ma and we can see women washing their clothes, the old. Very quiet, soothing and with a nice little coffee at the edge of the water!
Finally, every corner of the medina offers a magical view of the streets of the city or mountains that surround the medina. To visit Chefchaouen is also to take your time and to immerse yourself in the way of life of the inhabitants of Chefchaouen, very different from the frantic pace of the big cities of Morocco! As for all the Medinas of Morocco, to visit Chefchaouen it is above all to get lost in the alleys of the city and to walk without goal. Just open your eyes and wait for the meetings.
The Surroundings Of Chefchaouen
Another alternative to the rental car in Morocco, opt for a day trip by taxi but it will cost you more!
the Talassemtane National Park. Ideal for a trek, the park offers beautiful mountain scenery!
North of the park, do not miss the cascade of Akchour or the bridge of God (natural arch in the rock).
The medina of Tetouan is also very pleasant, with its houses and white lanes. You can spend half a day there. If you go from Tangier to Chefchaouen by bus, the bus will stop at Tetouan, so you can stop there and take a bus the next day (or later in the day if it's possible, or finish the trip in great taxi).
Surroundings of Chefchaouen
Finally, visiting Chefchaouen without climbing the heights of the city would be a mistake! In the immediate vicinity of Chefchaouen, you can stroll through the nearby mountains by starting your journey at the source of water Chefchaouen (ras el ma). At the beginning of the path, you may find yourself berthed by some young people who will want to sell you some locally produced resin. Do not be afraid, keep going. If the season is right, you will find on your course many figs, enough to feast on the course (September must be the ideal month for figs, during my last visit, I recovered with shovel ...) ! At the beginning of this path, go back and admire the panorama on the medina! This walk can be done on foot from the medina of Chefchaouen.
